When we first started out a few months ago we were ecstatic that someone was interested in stocking some of our work so quickly. It turned out to be more hassle than it was worth.
We submitted our work to a store called Libertine in Mt Lawley, Perth and the owners bought two of our shirts in the first week of October. She bought one of our men's shirts and cut it in to something more flattering for a woman.
We were supposed to get paid in the second week of November. It's now December and it still hasn't happened and they 'claim' that they were 'orders' so the transaction went through later.
The shirt that the owner cut up was right off the shelf so it defiantly wasn't an order and the other one, while it was a special order.. we still gave it to her in October. Transaction OVER. We should still get paid in November. Not still be waiting for it in December.
THEN they claimed that we didn't give them our payment details WHICH WE DID. We came down specifically to do it one day.
And the last straw was when we came down to pick up our stuff and they didn't have it ready for us even though we had emailed them about it in advance and had to sit around waiting when we we're supposed to be visiting family we don't get to see often.
The moral of the story is: never work on consignment and never deal with Libertine.
GRRRR.

When you left their store, did you shake your fist at them and shout 'THIS IS GOING ON MY BLOG, FUCKER!'?
haha no.
I might go around to all their other suppliers and tell them what Libertine have been saying behind their backs though :D
Nah I wouldn't do that. I'm just going to avoid commision work for THE REST OF MY LIFE.
I'm also not going to send anything to the 696 gallery in Melbourne anymore since they are the Libertine 'brother/sister' store.
Not that they are necessarilly corrupt too, but I just don't want to take that chance.
I'm really sad to hear about your disappointing experience. There are some good stores out there, really. Don't give up on the whole experience. xox
Gallery 696 is a great venue that is really supportive to all of their artists and pay them regularly etc. I can put you in contact with two people who stock work there at the moment and are doing really well. Don't stop yourself from growing.
I had that bad experience with the online consignment store. But I'm still working with the remainder that I'm with, I get regular payments, a lot of sales and so many more people are finding out about my work then what would just through my etsy store.
Don't give up, keep positive and don't write off all experiences as bad just yet. Do things because you want to do them, don't let others direct how you should operate your business.
I figured 696 is probably a great gallery to send to since I've heard lots of great feed back about them but I still think I'll leave it.
I paint for fun and for the love of it, not to necessarily make a living :)
I don't need to be big, I just want to be apart of it.
Thanks for the advice and wosdom though, it's mush appreciated.
I hate to say that consignment is like that in not just Libertine...
I found that we would get grumpy artists banging and rattling doors for payments when i was working at "you know where"...
Its just crap... Thats why ebay and etsy are so much better!!
Miss you! lets do lunch over xmas/Ny!! xx
oh I am so so sorry to hear that. I won't shop there! bugger. Don't let it put you off though, take advice from others who are stocking with reputable stockist and only deal with them? Hope you feel better now.
